Type of courses available

A varied package of courses is available, ranging from basic introductory seminars concerning the issues of rape and sexual abuse to comprehensive workshops on specialist counselling skills. The courses are adapted to suit the specific needs of the participants.

Training courses are provided on request for groups or organizations designed to meet the specific needs of the group or organization. Courses can be provided in our training rooms at 70 Lower Leeson Street, Dublin 2, or at a venue provided by the organization. DRCC has provided training throughout Ireland and overseas.

Schedule of Courses 2010

Topics which are addressed, include:

  • Myths and attitudes about rape or sexual abuse - the impact on the victim
  • Information re rape/child sexual abuse - research and statistics
  • The effects of rape or sexual abuse
  • Indicators of sexual abuse
  • The dynamics of abuse in the family
  • Developing organisational procedures and policy
  • Handling disclosures of sexual abuse/rape
  • Counselling Skills
  • Department of Health guidelines on reporting of Child Sexual Abuse
  • Vicarious traumatisation - dealing with the impact of the work

The courses are designed to maximise trainee participation, and the methodology includes information inputs, group discussion, role-play and case history.

The courses range in length from half-day seminars to twelve day workshops.

For whom are the courses intended?

To date, courses have been organised for teachers, guidance counsellors, chaplains, community workers, residential care workers, social workers, psychiatric nurses, community nurses, those working in the field of addiction, counsellors, psychologists and therapists. Courses are run with groups in their workplace, or in the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre.

The maximum number of participants is sixteen, and smaller groups are welcome. A fee is charged for professional training, details from the DRCC.
