How disappointing! Nothing has changed in the Pope’s Response says DRCC. Victims are asked to wait again.
Today Pope Benedict in his statement, following his meeting with Cardinal Brady and Archbishop Diarmuid Martin and high ranking members of the Roman Curia, said that “he shares the outrage, betrayal and shame felt by so many of the faithful in Ireland.” However he does not tell us what he feels about his church’s maintenance of secrecy, avoidance of scandal, protection of the reputation of the church and the preservation of its assets which according to Justice Murphy’s investigation were given priority over the welfare of children of Ireland and justice for victims.

The Dublin Rape Crisis Centre (DRCC) welcomes Minister Barry Andrews announcement today that he is allocating €15 million to resource the implementation plan of the Ryan Report and a further €3 million to finance a referendum on children’s rights
Ellen O’Malley-Dunlop, Chief Executive, DRCC, said “On a budget day when we anticipated a lot of bad news it is very welcome to see that the Government is putting our children where they rightfully belong, at the top of our responsibility agenda. By allocating €3million in 2010 for a referendum on the rights of the child, at last, we will have the opportunity as a nation to vote for enshrining the rights of our children in our constitution where they rightfully belong.

The Dublin Rape (DRCC) welcomes the publication today of Rape and Justice in Ireland a National Study of Survivor Perpetrator and Court Responses to Rape by Conor Hanley, Dr. Deirdre Healy and Stacey Scriver from NUI Galway. This important research was commissioned by the Rape Crisis Network of Ireland (RCNI).

Justice Gilligan today gave very clear direction as to the sections of the report that have to be redacted before publication. There are pending cases that would be prejudiced otherwise.

Broken Promises: Survivors forced to wait once again
The Dublin Rape Crisis Centre (DRCC) experienced an increase of 16% in calls to the National 24 hour Helpline for victims of rape and sexual abuse 1 800 77 88 88, in the first six months of 2009 (7,560 calls) compared to the same period in 2008 (6,522 calls). This increase is due mainly to the huge surge in calls to the Helpline following the Ryan Report. There was a 300% increase in the number of first time callers disclosing past childhood sexual abuse in May 2009 compared to the same period in May 2008.

Support Agencies Urge Survivors Of Sexual Abuse To Reach Out For Help
Support agencies today expressed concern at the likely impact of the publication of the Dublin Archdiocese Report on people who have experienced sexual abuse. Following the publication of the Ryan Report in May, thousands of people contacted counselling and advocacy services for help. Many people were telling their stories for the very first time, and had never even spoken to family members or friends.

Today Justice Paul Gilligan delivered his judgment in the High Court on the publication of the Commission of Investigation into Clerical Sexual Abuse in the Archdiocese between 1975 and 2004.

The Dublin Rape Crisis Centre (DRCC) launches its Staying Safe Tips as the number of people accompanied to the Sexual Assault Treatment Unit in June and July rises by 12% from 2008
The DRCC is launching its Staying Safe Tips for young people in particular, at this time of year. In June and July last year, the centre’s trained volunteers accompanied 50 people to the Sexual Assault Treatment Unit (SATU) at the Rotunda Hospital. In June and July this year the number was 56. This is an increase of 12% from 2008 and it looks like August will also show an increase from last year.
