Traumatic Treatment Of Rape Victims
In the past two weeks two victims of rape had to travel from Sligo to Dublin to the Sexual Assault Treatment Unit (SATU) in the Rotunda Hospital as there is currently no service available in the West of Ireland. There are only four SATU units in Ireland, Dublin, Cork, Waterford, and Letterkenny and these are still under resourced.

The Panorama Programme “Sex Crimes and the Vatican” highlighted, yet again, the enormity and the endemic nature of sex abuse in the Catholic Church. After the publication of the Ferns Report in October 2005, we were left in no doubt but that this crime was widespread in our own country.

DRCC response to the Supreme Court’s decision on the Mr. A case and the Mr. C case
We at the DRCC are pleased with the Supreme Court’s decision on the Mr. A case and the Mr. C case. We appreciate the complexity of this whole area from a legal perspective. From the perspective of the victims of sexual abuse and violence, it is a welcome response. However it is not good enough that this man will be freed in January 2007. Sentencing to date, of sexual offenders, is badly in need of review, as well as the whole area relating to sexual offences.

Galway Survey examines Rape Victims’ Experience of Legal System
Dublin Rape Crisis Centre has launched a media campaign to highlight an important national survey and to appeal to eligible members of the public to participate. The Faculty of Law at NUI Galway is conducting a national survey of men and women who have experienced sex against their will.

The Lord Mayor Launches Rape Crisis Website
This week, as the Anniversary year comes to a close, the DRCC is “Focusing on the Future” with the launch of a re-designed and updated website www.drcc.ie. The Lord Mayor of Dublin, Catherine Byrne, formally launched the website.

The Dublin Rape Crisis Centre calls for a Nationwide Public Awareness Campaign concerning Sexual Abuse, in the wake of the Ferns Report
In the last number of weeks since the publication of the Ferns Report, the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre has experienced a significant increase in the number of calls it has received regarding clerical sexual abuse. Increases of up to 75% of regular call levels were experienced. This dramatic response by the public comes as no surprise to the DRCC.
