PRESS RELEASE - 19th February 2010
Hope Dashed Again for Survivors of Clerical Abuse
Today, Andrew Madden, Marie Collins and other survivors of clerical abuse with Maeve Lewis
from One in Four, met with Archbishop Diarmuid Martin. Andrew Madden’s statement after the
meeting of his ”huge disappointment” and his observation of a ‘very different man to the man
I met last Saturday in advance of his trip to Rome” must send out a message to all survivors
that their last hope is now part of the closing ranks of the powerful institution The Church.
Ellen O'Malley-Dunlop, Chief Executive, DRCC, said “It is now clear that the Church
has a strategy in place to deal with this problem. This strategy does not have a shred of humanity
or compassion. It is a process that the Institution Church will follow in its own time. Will it
benefit the survivors? I doubt it very much since their requests were not acknowledged after this
meeting nor were they acted upon.
The National 24 hour Helpline for victims and survivors is 1 800 77 88 88. When you call
this number there will be a trained person at the end of the line who will listen and respond
to your needs,’
