Friday 19th October 2007 - Awareness Raising Campaign
With the support of Dublin Rape Crisis Centre's benefactors and Cosc - the National Office for the Prevention of Domestic, Sexual and Gender based Violence, we have been able to commission a TV Advertising Campaign and an Outdoor Poster Campaign. The purpose of this campaign is to raise public awareness of the crimes of rape and sexual abuse and to encourage those who need help to access our National 24 hour Helpline. One of the important messages of this campaign is that whatever the trauma, recovery is possible, and with the help that is available 'you can come through this'. The campaign was formally launched by the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform, Brian Lenihan, and started on 22nd October 2007.

The Awareness Raising Campaign posters can be downloaded below (click on thumbnail to see larger picture, or on the link below to dowload the PDF version).

December 2006 - Terrible things happen behind closed doors
Given the rise in the levels of sexual violence reported in 2006, The Dublin Rape Crisis Centre (DRCC) has launched a national advertising campaign. An awareness raising advertisement “Behind Closed Doors” is exhibited in cinemas throughout the country courtesy of Carlton Screen Advertising.
The advertisement highlights the fact that no matter what the circumstances are, it is never the victim’s fault. Over half of rapists are known to their victims. In the case of children, the abuser is often someone who is close to them. These are some of the reasons why rape and sexual abuse often remain hidden and behind closed doors. The advertisement invites those people (men, women and young people) to come forward, so that they can be helped and learn to live the life they deserve, through the healing process.
The DRCC has found that during holiday periods the number of people contacting their Helpline who experience recent rape or sexual assault, dramatically increases. This is particularly true in the Christmas and New Year period. In December 2005, the number of calls to the Helpline was 1,187. In January 2006 the number was 1,368. In the same period, trained volunteers accompanied 30 people to the Sexual Assault Treatment Unit in December and 32 in January. The Centre is urging people to take precautions particularly at Christmas and other holiday periods and not to make it easy for the predators who are out there.
The DRCC encourages people to contact the Freephone Helpline 1 800 77 8888 which is open all the time, 24 hours a day, every day. This is not an answering machine service. There is always a trained counsellor at the end of the line.
This campaign is supported by the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform.

March 7th, 2006 - Galway Survey examines Rape Victims’ Experience of Legal System
Dublin Rape Crisis Centre launched a media campaign to highlight an important national survey, commissioned by the Rape Crisis Network of Ireland (RCNI) and to appeal to eligible members of the public to participate. The Faculty of Law at NUI Galway is conducting a national survey of men and women who have experienced sex against their will. Breda Allen of the DRCC said: “The aim of the study is to find out what factors influence people’s decisions to report or not report to the Gardai when they experience sex against their will, and for those who do report, to find out what response they get from the criminal justice system. Angela McCarthy, Clinical Director explains: “For the purposes of the survey, we need men and women who have experienced sex against their will in Ireland since 2002, and who were aged 18 or over at the time. We in DRCC are actively encouraging this group of people to take part, as this is a groundbreaking three year study with the potential to bring about change. The senior researcher is Deirdre Healy at NUI Galway.
This is your chance to let your voice be heard.

November 23rd, 2005 - Lord Mayor of Dublin visits the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre
As the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre’s 25th Anniversary year comes to a close, the Centre is now "Focusing on the Future" with the launch of its redesigned and updated website. The Lord Mayor of Dublin, Catherine Byrne, visited the Centre on Wednesday 23rd November to meet staff and volunteers and to formally launch the website. The Lord Mayor said “I congratulate the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre on 25 years of service to the public. Over all these years they have been there for the many men and women who have experienced sexual abuse and rape. This new website will help people make that first contact with the Centre which is so important”.

October 10th, 2005 - Conference: "Sexual Abuse and Violence"
The Dublin Rape Crisis Centre was founded 25 years ago by a group of people who shared a common concern about the growing incidence of rape in Ireland. A Conference "Sexual Abuse and Violence - Responding to Change" took place in Dublin to mark the 25th anniversary of the DRCC and provided an opportunity to reflect both on the past achievements of the Centre and on the challenges which face it in the future.

October 10th, 2005 - Book Launched
To mark its 25th Anniversary, a book outlining the history of the Centre was published and launched at the Centre's 25th Anniversary Conference. "Without Fear: 25 Years of the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre" was written by award winning journalist Susan McKay. Without Fear is the first full account of Dublin's Rape Crisis Centre. At times horrific, it details the shameful scandals of key high-profile rape cases in the seventies, eighties and nineties, offering definitive insights on the battle for better sevices, longer sentences and legal amendments. "Without Fear" is available from all leading Irish bookshops.

October 10th, 2005 - SAVI Follow-up Study
A 3 year follow-up research study to the original SAVI Report (Sexual Abuse and Violence in Ireland) was launched at the Conference. This was commissioned by the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre and carried out by the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. It considers the long-term implications of research on sensitive issues for participants. What general lessons can be learned from assessing the long-term impact of speaking about sexual abuse in a research interview. Copies of SAVI Revisited are available by contacting the DRCC."
