DRCC responds to BBC’s Panorama Programme

Monday, October 2nd, 2006

The Panorama Programme “Sex Crimes and the Vatican” highlighted, yet again, the enormity and the endemic nature of sex abuse in the Catholic Church. After the publication of the Ferns Report in October 2005, we were left in no doubt but that this crime was widespread in our own country. The report documented the abuse of 100 girls and boys by 26 priests in the Diocese of Ferns.

During this period the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre experienced an unprecedented rise in calls to its helpline from all over the country. An increase of 40% on the average monthly figures.

Ellen O’Malley-Dunlop, Chief Executive of DRCC said “In the midst of the current arguments about this programme, yet again, the child gets lost. What have we learned? We have learned that it is imperative to have proper Child Protection Guidelines. It’s important that the church, along with all organisations and institutions that deal with children, implement these guidelines and procedures in a clear and transparent way and in co-operation with the law of the land”.

We are aware that this programme may have upset viewers and triggered memories. Our Helpline is 1800 778888 and our team of Telephone Counsellors are ready and available.
